What Does a Deerfield Beach Periodontist Actually Do?

Very simply, a periodontist is a dental specialist who treats the supporting structures of the teeth including the gums, roots and bone.

The goal of a periodontist is to recognize gum disease, determine if the gum disease is advancing and then provide treatment options to correct your smile.

Treatment usually includes the following:

  • Helping patients to perform a higher level of oral hygiene and home care (just like your dentist does)!
  • Provide a deeper cleaning than normal to remove tartar from behind the gums as well as the use of antibiotic therapy or direct delivery of antimicrobials into infected areas.
  • Provide surgical treatment (when necessary) for more advanced periodontal disease.
  • Provide cosmetic surgery or reconstructive surgery to help fix smiles that have been damaged by the affects of gum disease.

Our role is to assure that the foundation of your smile (gums, teeth structure, etc.) is adequate for treatment and for dental restorations such as crown, bridges or dentures.

Also, we will help you understand if other health factors are involved in your periodontal disease, such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes or other medical influences.
