Signs of Gum Disease – How Do I Know I Might Have a Problem?

Gum Disease. No one wants to hear about gum disease when they visit their dentist or your periodontist. If you’re like most people, you think, “oh – I’ve not been taking good care of my teeth.”

Well, that may or not be the case (though we could all do a little better probably when it comes to managing our dental hygiene). But we’re busy, active and sometime forgetful when it comes to oral care. And yes, even with good care, some people are more prone to gum disease than others.

So, whether you have gum disease (and don’t know it yet) or you’re worried about getting it, how might you know you have a problem?

Whether you have one of these signs – or a combination of them – you should speak with your dentist so a treatment plan can be created for you.

What are Some Specific Effects of Advanced Gum Disease?

  • Bad breath that is constant
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Bleeding, ‘tender to the touch’ gums
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Receding gum lines
  • Loose teeth
  • Chewing that is uncomfortable or painful
