But are you one of those patients who are telling “a little white lie?” The reality is that experienced dentists know this once that poke around in your mouth a little bit.
Most people just don’t want to admit that they’re not taking the best care of their teeth and gums (and ultimately their breath as well).
Take a look at this Infographic (below) from the American Academy of Periodontology.
“A new national survey released today reveals more than a quarter (27 percent) of U.S. adults admit they lie to their dentist about how often they floss their teeth.
Additionally, more than one-third of Americans (36 percent) would rather do an unpleasant activity like cleaning the toilet (14 percent) over daily flossing.”
We see a lot of advanced cases of periodontal disease at our office here in Fort Lauderdale, so these numbers are not necessarily shocking to us. As a profession, dental professionals (along with parents and adults everywhere) still have a lot to do when it comes to educating ourselves and our families about the impact of proper dental hygiene, especially as well age (40 and above).
Other factors that build over years (like the impact of smoking or genetic aptitude for gum disease) when combined with improper dental care, can really impact your teeth and gums long term.
So, incorporating some flossing and regular dental checkups becomes so important. It shouldn’t take a “shocking” infographic to tell us that.
