We get the Question Frequently, “What is Periodontal Disease?”
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and/or bone that surrounds the tooth. It’s sometimes referred to as gum disease.
If not treated, it can lead to gum and/or bone loss around the teeth, further infection, tooth loss and potentially other medical issues including increased risk for heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.
Generally, the disease is painless and most patients are not aware they have a problem until examined by a dentist or periodontist.
Treatment consists of cleaning the teeth above and below the gum line. In advanced cases, surgery is required.
If you have questions for a periodontist – what we do, how we can help your smile, how we treat gum disease or what services we provide for ‘fixing smiles’ – please contact our offices. We’d be happy to talk more with you!
