When you have early signs of gum disease or periodontitis, your dentist should be able to detect them and refer you to a periodontist.
Ok – what’s the difference in a dentist and a periodontist?
To keep it very simple…
You should see a periodontist when you have a case of periodontitis or gum disease because a periodontist is specially trained to handle infections in the soft tissue of the gum and bone that support the teeth. They will handle advanced issues.
A dentist will focus on general dentistry – preventative, restorative and cosmetic treatments. Naturally, some dentist will offer more advanced services than others. And in some ways the type of treatments may overlap.
But generally, when a dentist suspects a case of gum disease, they will send you to a periodontist.
If you have questions for a periodontist – what we do, how we can help your smile, how we treat gum disease or what services we provide for ‘fixing smiles’ – please contact our offices. We’d be happy to talk more with you!
