Why Would You Need to See a Deerfield Beach Periodontist?

Why would you need a Periodontist?

periodontist in deerfield beach, fl

Hello! I’m Dr. Nick DeTure, your local Broward County periodontist.

Patients go to visit a Periodontist because they have periodontal disease, better known as gum disease.

Periodontists can offer specific treatments to help their patients overcome issues with their gums, teeth and supporting bone structure of the mouth. Our goal as periodontists is to restore your healthy smile!

Gum disease is sometimes known as the ‘silent infection and affects half of all American adults over the age of 30*.

*According to studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have mild, moderate or severe periodontitis (the more advanced form of periodontal disease) is essentially half of the adult population. Read more here at the American Academy of Periodontology website.

Fortunately, most people with good habits and favorable genes can control periodontal disease with regular dental care.

Others with numerous host factors such as stress, tobacco, inadequate home care and medical disorders can lose considerable ground if periodontal disease goes undetected and untreated.

Periodontists and dentists can help you keep your smile healthy through regular checkups and cleanings. With advancing gum disease that needs to be treated or corrected, periodontists can offer a number of solutions to battle gum disease, replace teeth and provide plans for appropriate oral hygiene for the future.

Specific Reasons to see a Periodontist

  • Bleeding while brushing or eating normal foods. Unexplained bleeding while performing regular cleaning or consuming food is the most common sign of a periodontal infection.
  • Bad breath. Ongoing halitosis (bad breath), which continues despite rigorous oral cleaning, can point to periodontitis, gingivitis or the beginnings of a gum infection.
  • Loose teeth and gum recession. Longer-looking and loose-feeling teeth can indicate recession of the gums and/or bone loss as a result of periodontal disease.
  • Related health concerns. Patients with heart disease, diabetes, osteopenia or osteoporosis are often diagnosed with correlating periodontal infections. The bacterial infection can spread through the blood stream, affecting other areas of the body.
