Common complaint we here in our offices is, “I’m embarrassed by my smile” or “I don’t like smiling because it shows my teeth – and they don’t look good.”
We don’t like hearing that. Apparently though, this is a relatively common complaint from many people.
A recent Huffington Post article, titled Why Growing Numbers of Americans Are Embarrassed to Smile seeks to spread a little light on why so many people are uncomfortable sharing a smile with friends, family…and strangers.
According to the article, “fifteen years ago this spring, Surgeon General David Satcher issued a call to action to address what he called America’s “silent epidemic” — the growing incidence of dental disease in this country.”
The article goes on to point out that it’s not just people with lower economic resources who are putting off their regular dental care. Researchers found that affluent Americans are too. And both groups are self-conscious about their teeth.
Basic dental care for many is too expensive, or, an expense that they’re not willing to make when faced with other obligations. Yet basic dental care can have long lasting results on both your oral health as well as your overall health. Over the last few years, we’ve seen the correlation between oral health, heart health, diabetes, mental health and more.
