A common question we get from patients is “how does my general dentist and (and you) my periodontist work together to help me?”
Great question.
We communicate with your dentist throughout your care, from the initial development of your treatment plans, about any reconstructive options that need to be considered and for ongoing ‘oral healthcare maintenance’ once we’ve addressed and corrected any issues.
Remember, your dentist is generally your first line of defense (for most patients).
While you can observe your own oral health issues and then communicate them, it’s your dentist who will be able to truly determine the severity of a problem – whether it’s something to “keep an eye on” or an issue that needs to be tackled immediately.
Your dentist will create a plan for addressing any issues you have with painful gums, receding gums, advancing gum disease, needs for implants, etc.
Once those issues get beyond your dentist’s level of care, they will refer your to a periodontist like us (or suggest you find one that is suitable for your needs).
It’s at that point that the relationship between your dentist and our office begins.
If you have questions for a periodontist – and how we work with your usual dentist – please contact our offices. We’d be happy to talk more with you!
