What is a Periodontist and What is Periodontal Disease?

periodontist helps ft. lauderdale patients with gum problems

When searching around online for a periodontist to visit (because of issues with gum disease, needing implants or studying up on LANAP therapy procedures) our patients often start with asking some very basic questions….including…

What is a periodontist?  Are they different that my regular dentist?

Very simply, a periodontist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease, as well as dental implant placement.

Periodontists have completed 4 years of dental school plus go on to receive an additional 3 years of training to obtain the necessary education to perform procedures in periodontics. For a periodontist like Dr. Nick DeTure, their education and experience is a consistent and continuing process as they learn and implement new techniques, procedures and approaches for better care.

It’s important to know that your general dentist may refer you to a periodontist if you exhibit the symptoms of gum disease or need a dental implant; however, you may schedule an appointment on your own if you have concerns about your oral health.

What is periodontal disease, and am I at risk of developing it?

Periodontal disease affects the gums and bones supporting the teeth.

Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease or “gum disease” often is attributed to the bacteria in dental plaque, which causes the gums to become inflamed and infected – and for many, the first signs that something is wrong.

Smoking, tobacco use, poor nutrition, stress and other factors, may put you at risk of developing gum disease.

Are there ways to prevent periodontal disease?

A good oral hygiene regimen is imperative in preventing periodontal disease.

Proper brushing and flossing along with regular dental visits to your dentist for professional cleaning, will help keep your smile healthy.

If you have periodontal disease that is treated, you will need to schedule more frequent visits to ensure that your treatment is maintained.
