When that happens consistently, it’s time to contact your dentist.
The bacteria that cause inflammation of the gums that are called Gingivitis. When yore dealing with this, the gums become red, swollen and can bleed easily. Gingivitis is the mild form of gum disease and can generally be addressed with better dental hygiene.
When it is not treated, it can advance to Periodontitis. With periodontitis, your gums literally pull away from your teeth, forming what are called “pockets” – space between the gum and tooth which becomes infected.
