Schedule Your Periodontist Visit in 2016
As 2015 winds down and 2016 is just around the corner, it’s important to remember that now is a good time to schedule appointments with our office.
We tend to see an uptick in appointments scheduled as people put off making appointments in December due to the holidays and busy schedules. They then push those appointments back into January.
Also, many patients fall into 2 groups — one group who makes it a New Year’s resolution to visit our office for treatment, and one group who puts off their visit until they absolutely have to come in.
We hope you’re part of the first group and can schedule your appointment with us in January and February. This is especially true if you’re experiencing pain or bleeding with your gums or have been recommended by your dentist to come see us.

With school starting up across Broward County, we know that many people will be getting back into more regular routines that are not interrupted by summer schedules.
For those of you with school aged kids, that means getting them back on their “brushing and flossing” routines. And maybe even for you it means getting back to regular oral care.

Deerfield Beach Patients Want to Know, What Causes Periodontal Disease?
When our patients come into our offices in Deerfield Beach, one of the common questions we’re asked is, “what causes periodontal disease?”
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection. The means bacteria will begin to accumulate along the gum line in the form of plaque.
Then, the body’s immune system sends white blood cells to fight the bacteria. This is very normal. However, this response actually encourages the gum tissue to break down in order to make room for the blood vessels (that’s when things start to go bad).
As a result, “pockets” form between the gums and the tooth’s hard surfaces. This provides ideal conditions for more bacterial growth.
Eventually, the interaction of bacteria with the body’s immune system can result in destruction of bone that supports each tooth.
These “pockets” are one of the signs our hygienists look for and/or evaluate when patients first come to our office for treatment.

When Should You Consult a Deerfield Beach Periodontist?
When should you see a periodontist?
Well, there are few signs that will help guide you. Very often, your dentist will recommend that you see a periodontist because your gums have gotten to the point where they need advanced treatment – more than your general dentist will treat.
Yes – your dentist will know when you’ve got gum disease or gingivitis – or are headed that way!
There are a bunch of other signs that you and your dentist will note including:
- A receding gum line – whether there is pain associated with it or not
- Chronic inflammation of the gums
- Painful gums
- Infected gums
- Bleeding gums
- Pockets around your teeth or gums that have pulled away from your teeth
- Loose teeth
- Pain when eating, biting or chewing
- Bad breath
It’s unfortunate, but early gum disease is often missed because there may not be any pain at all in the developing stages. That means it gets overlooked or ignored.
Pain will come later though (as described above) and usually when the disease is permanent or very expensive to treat.
By thoroughly checking the gum line (when you go for your regular checkups), your dentist will notice early signs of infection and inflammation (and the bullet points above).
Inflammation and infection, when treated early, can be stopped from spreading to the bone surrounding your teeth. Once the bone becomes infected eventual loss of teeth may occur. Early detection will prevent all this and the treatment will not be too expensive.
